Top Student Undergrad Teams Present Product Development Projects to McGraw-Hill/Irwin Executives

The SM323/McGraw-Hill/Irwin New Product Challenge is one of the highlights of the School of Management undergraduate award-winning Core program.

SMG’s SM323 set of courses (also known as “The Core”) is one of the key elements differentiating the BU School of Management’s undergraduate curriculum. The four functional courses are integrated into a unique one-semester sequence through a common semester-long project focused on new product development.

The Challenge was born in 1997 as a means to recognize the top Core teams. Each year, the SM323 faculty nominate projects from approximately 80 SM323 plans for review by McGraw-Hill Irwin. McGraw-Hill/Irwin selects three finalists to present their plans, with the winning team members receiving prizes and their names on the SM323/McGraw-Hill/Irwin New Product Challenge trophy.  This year’s finalist teams and faculty advisors were:

This year’s Judging Panel included:

The judges rated the DanceStar team first with a strong presentation and Q&A session. The winners received Apple store gift certificates, signed and framed certificates, and their team’s product name engraved onto the challenge trophy.

THE 2010 SM323 FINALIST TEAMS PRODUCT DESCRIPTIONS

The Black Belt is a woven fabric bike lock composed of a blend of Kevlar and braided steel, making the strapping cut- and flame-proof. It is gentle enough to leave bike frames unharmed, and it can also be easily stored in your back pocket for maximum portability and convenience. It offers security that can compete with current bike locks on the market, while providing greater levels of storability and adaptability than any lock available.

DanceStar is an at-home dance studio enabling aspiring dancers the opportunity to practice the skills they learn in class in a structured home environment, while also providing kids not enrolled in dance classes the chance to develop dance skills. The package includes a 6’x4’ dance platform, which detaches into four separate 2’x3’ pieces to make for easy storage and disassembly; a height adjustable ballet barre; a metronome; and an instructional DVD. This educational design is an investment in your child’s well-being and will provide memories that will last for years to come.

The Seeker is a high-tech, easy-to-use children’s game that adds suspense, versatility, and fairness to the classic game of Hide and Seek.  The Seeker includes four headsets, one for seeking and three for hiding.  Using radio waves, hiders are given aural cues as to how far away the seeker is; for the seeker, it gives clues about how far away the hiders are.  Within close range, the cues fade away, letting the game play out the old-fashioned way. The Seeker can be played indoors or out, by any number of people, and provides year-round fun for the entire family!
