Former Students Create Peter Arnold Scholarship
More than 70 current and former students, faculty colleagues, staff, and family members surprised Professor of Operations and Technology Management Peter Arnold on the afternoon of May 3, 2012 with a retirement reception, which featured a surprise of its own.
Tara Quinn earned her BSBA in 1998, but she always kept in touch with Arnold. It was his influence, his dedication to teaching, and his tough-but-fair handling of students that won him the praise of fellow faculty and the love of those he taught, including her.
Upon learning of his imminent retirement this year, Quinn contacted classmates and former professors and started the Professor Peter Arnold Scholarship Fund in his honor. “The thought that future SMG students would not benefit from his wisdom and encouragement is really unfortunate. However, knowing others will be able to attend the school because of the scholarship is something we can all feel good about, and it also honors Peter as a revered educator, mentor, and respected colleague at BU.”
Almost a dozen people came forward and shared stories at the reception, each one provoking laughter, tears, or both, including Professor John Mahon (a frequent teaching and curriculum planning partner with Arnold at the School, who is now teaching at the University of Maine).
The Professor Peter Arnold Scholarship Fund will provide scholarship awards based on financial need to one or more deserving undergraduate students at the School of Management until the donations are used. If the Fund reaches a minimum of $100,000, then it can be permanently endowed for annual scholarships in perpetuity.
