In this time of increasing economic uncertainty, Boston University School of Management continues to deliver value, according to BusinessWeek. The publication officially ranks full-time MBA programs in even years, updating  Schools’ profile data in odd years. According to updated 2009 profile data, the School of Management has a 90% job placement rate for MBAs, which places the School 5th compared to the top 30 schools. The School also reports an average starting salary of $93,725, which is 96% of the average salary for the top 30 schools ranked.

Top 30 schools among the top five for job placement are University of Chicago, Yale University, Washington University, Harvard Business School, and Stanford University (tied with Boston University).

Douglas T. Hall Gives Money Magazine Advice on Hiring a Career Coach

HallDouglasWhen Money Magazine wanted to know, “Should You Hire a Career Coach?” they turned for advice to Douglas T. (Tim) Hall, the Morton H. and Charlotte Friedman Professor in Management at Boston University School of Management and director of the School’s Executive Development Roundtable. Money reports,

If you want to pursue individual coaching, some due diligence can help ensure that your money is well spent. Start by asking for referrals, both from people you know and a professional group in your industry.

Narrow your list to three, and interview them to find out about their experience, success rates, and typical clients. Be wary of coaching certifications, says Douglas T. Hall, professor of organizational behavior at Boston University’s School of Management. (Some can be achieved in a single weekend.) Instead, look for a master’s in counseling psychology, human resources, or organizational leadership. Speak with past clients about their experiences and, finally, request a free initial session.

Treat job hunt “as additional class” and “tap hidden market,” McRoberts urges

Reporting on job shortages in the financial services sector—and savvy career-seekers’ strategies for success despite these shortages—the Boston Globe solicits advice from Karen McRoberts, a senior corporate recruiter at the Feld Career Center and Boston University School of Management. They write,

It used to be that a master of business administration could almost guarantee a gig on Wall Street, but not anymore. A national unemployment rate that hit 9.7 percent last month has left six job seekers for every one job. Adding to that, the financial services sector, a mainstay for MBA grads, cut tens of thousands of jobs following the financial crisis and continues to shed hundreds of jobs each month….That has left some MBA graduates wondering how to adapt their career plans to the new market realities so they can use their coveted degrees….
 
Whatever they decide, Karen McRoberts, the senior corporate recruiter at Boston University’s School of Management, said students who are persistent and can reconfigure their job hunt are reporting success. She said the students who have been most successful in finding jobs are the ones who tap into what she calls “the hidden job market,’’ or who apply for jobs at companies that “may have two or three opportunities, or even just one opportunity, as opposed to 100 opportunities.’’
 
“We’ve certainly felt the repercussions of the past year,’’ said McRoberts….“But those students who treat the job hunt as if it’s an additional class will be successful. I think there’s a realization that you have a plan A, but now might not be the time to go after that plan A, so it’s good to have backup plans.’’

School Jumps 31 Places in the Economist ‘Which MBA?’ Rankings

With the largest gain of any institution surveyed by the Economist for their ‘Which MBA?’ ranking, Boston University School of Management improved its standing by an impressive 31 spots to place 21st in the United States and 40th internationally. The survey emphasizes four student-centered criteria: the extent to which the program opens new career opportunities; the level of personal development and educational experience; post-program increase in salary; and the networking facilitated by the program. The School of Management was recognized for its success in each of these areas, and was named #1 in the world in terms of diversity of recruiters.

The top five schools from New England included in the ranking were Harvard Business School (3rd nationally), Dartmouth College–Tuck School of Management (4), MIT Sloan School of Management (9), Yale School of Management (13), and Boston University School of Management (21).

Financial Times MBA Ranking: BU in US Top 10 for Job Placement , Percentage of Women & International Students

Job Placement #4, Women #3, and International Students #6; DBA Rankings Leap

Financial Times has released its Global MBA Rankings, and Boston University School of Management has retained its international reputation overall (placing 61st worldwide and 34th in the U.S.) and made a significant gain in the category of doctoral rank (up 32 places to 43rd internationally).

This MBA ranking is determined largely through a survey of MBA alumni on topics related to career progress and salary (the alumni survey accounts for 55% of the ranking).

In addition to the survey, the ranking examines several other criteria, including doctoral program success, employment rates, and student demographics. Those data provide us with the following ranks:

  • Due to DBA graduates receiving faculty positions at top schools, our “Doctoral Rank” increased 32 places to 43rd internationally.
  • Our employment rate within 3 months of graduation (90%) tied us for 4th best in the U.S. and 16th internationally.
  • Our percentage of women students (40%) tied us for the 5th highest percentage internationally and 3rd in the U.S.
  • Our percentage of international students (44%) tied us for 6th highest for U.S. schools.
