Undergraduate Student Profile
Our goal is produce graduates who can begin contributing to their new organization on day one. During their time at the School, they will have learned the “bigger picture’ of organizations (how the pieces all fit together); focused on one or more areas of functional expertise; worked on multiple projects that cross industry, cultural, and departmental lines; explored the ethical and social ramifications of business decisions; and led and contributed to multiple teams.
We strive to create young people who will evolve into the next generation of leaders, who will create value for their organizations, their communities, and their world.
Business from the Beginning: At the School of Management, business education begins on day one of freshman year. In a year-long introduction to management course, students work in teams to create, manage, and track a stock portfolio, evaluate organizations and industries to deliver strategic recommendations, and develop presentation skills.
Beyond Balance Sheets: By the end of their freshman year, SMG students are able to:
- Analyze annual reports;
- Assess a company’s value;
- Construct a SWOT analysis; and
- Think strategically about marketing initiatives.
Hard & Soft Skills: During their sophomore year, SMG students are required to take two courses each in accounting and statistics, in order to develop the necessary analytical skills to operate in today’s business environment.
We place equal importance on developing the soft skills that embody transformative leadership. Sophomores also complete a mandatory organizational behavior class that hones their presentation and team-building skills, as well as prepares them to give and receive feedback in the work world.
By the end of their sophomore year, SMG students can:
- Create regression and optimization models;
- Understand complex statistical reports;
- Utilize the principles of financial and managerial accounting; and
- Take on different roles within a team.
Putting the Pieces Together: During their junior year, SMG undergraduates participate in an intense cross-functional semester of four inter-related courses of finance, marketing, operations, and management information systems, known as CORE, in which students develop a comprehensive business plan to launch a new product.
CORE enables our students to see business as more than the sum of its parts and stresses the interdepartmental connections that allow businesses to operate. It also encourages them to think creatively when conceptualizing a new product and seeing it through to market introduction.
At the end of CORE, SMG students can:
- Create sales and forecasting models;
- Optimize factory production capabilities;
- Analyze supply chains; and
- Leverage information systems to maximize efficiencies.
Specialization: After five rigorous semesters building the foundations of excellent business leadership, SMG students can specialize in up to three of the following areas of business: Accounting, Entrepreneurship, Finance, General Management, International Management, Law, Management Information Systems, Marketing, Operations & Technology, or Organizational Behavior.
All SMG undergraduates are required to complete a mandatory career management course that focuses on their long-term career goals, teaches resume and interview preparation, and prepares students for participation in our Campus Recruiting Program. As early as their sophomore year, SMG students begin exploring internships. By the end of their senior year, many students have completed three intensive summer internships and an internship experience abroad.
