MBA/JD in Law and Health Sector Management

The Master of Business Administration / Juris Doctor (MBA/JD) in Law and Health Sector Management is offered as a dual degree, administered jointly by the School of Law and the School of Management (SMG). It equips you with an understanding of the interaction between legal and management principles in the field of health services delivery.

Health lawyers struggle with new and traditional legal problems in this economic sector, which encompasses more than 14 percent of the gross domestic product. These problems include ownership of electronic medical records, public health and environmental risks, ethics and intellectual property rights involved with gene therapy, and countless others.

Because the schools share many areas of focus, you can complete both degrees in four and a half years rather than the usual five.

If your interest is health care, BU's MBA/JD program in Law and Health Sector Management, offered in conjunction with SMG, equips you with an understanding of the interaction of legal and management principles in the field of health-services delivery. This program enables you to earn both an MBA in Health Sector Management and a JD in an accelerated program of four years rather than the usual five.

Program Requirements

In this program, students will complete the first year of the Law School curriculum and then begin taking GSM courses part time during the first semester of their second year. They will then take one GSM course each semester of the third year. Their final year, students will take only GSM courses to complete the dual degree. The JD is awarded by the Law School and the MBA is awarded by the School of Management.

Students must complete a 400-hour internship to gain practical experience in one facet of the health sector. Typically, students complete their internship requirement during a summer term.

Tuition

While students are attending both the School of Law and SMG, they pay only one set of tuition. However, if a student exceeds 18 credits in a given semester, he or she will be charged additional tuition.

Students who take summer SMG courses while considered a law student must pay extra tuition for those courses.

Students receive scholarships from their “home school" -- in this case, the School of Law. Students should not expect scholarship awards from SMG. For more information on how to obtain financial aid and scholarships from the School of Law, please refer to their website.

Admission Process

Applicants interested in the joint MBA/JD in Health Sector Management should submit completed applications to both the School of Law and the School of Management. Regardless of the deadline you choose to meet, please be sure to submit your applications to each school at the same time.
