Andy Ungerman, MS in Mathematical Finance ’13
“I chose MSMF because, with my strong math background and my interest in the fields of both finance and math, the program was a perfect fit for me.”
Formula for success
Andy came to Boston from Ohio specifically for the School of Management Math Finance program. “The application and admissions process was very straightforward and efficient; it seemed like a program that was well organized and on the rise. I also wanted to experience the city of Boston,” he says.
The Mathematical Finance program is an intensive program that attracts students with backgrounds in math, physics, engineering, and other highly quantitative fields. The coursework includes exploration of statistics, stochastic modeling, and programming as they apply to the creation of financial instruments, portfolios, and risk management. “I chose MSMF because the program was a perfect fit for me with my strong math background and my interest in the fields of both finance and math. The professors are very friendly and helpful. I’ve enjoyed the small size of the class and the close-knit community feeling among students and professors.”
Andy also takes advantage of the School’s online tools and services. “MBA CareerLink, the online system created by the School’s Feld Career Center, is a great resource for jobs and internships, as is the SMGTools website for course info and scheduling, where you can exchange and share material with professors or classmates.”
Andy is the current vice president of the MBA Investment Club. He says basketball, working out at BU’s Fitness and Recreation Center, and golf are his other extracurricular interests. Meanwhile, he’s seeking a post-graduation job in sales and trading, perhaps in Boston, New York, or Chicago.
“Boston is a fun city: young, vibrant, and clean. It was also an easy transition from the Midwest. BU’s campus is great and the students are friendly,” he adds. “It was a good choice for me.”
