Award-winning Faculty Paper—Brands Matter: An Empirical Demonstration of the Creation of Shareholder value through Branding

Winner of the Sheth Foundation award for best paper published in the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science in 2006 (appearing in volume 34, no. 2)

By Susan Fournier, Associate Professor of Marketing at Boston University; Thomas J. Madden; and Frank Fehle

Using the Fama-French method from finance as well as a leading marketplace measure of a brand's financial equity value, this study provides empirical evidence of the branding-shareholder value creation link. Results build on previous research by showing that strong brands not only deliver greater returns to stockholders versus a relevant benchmark, they do so with less risk--a finding that holds when market share and firm size are considered.
