Bioinformatics and Intellectual Property: Strangers or Strange Bedfellows?

Q: How is the emergence of bioinformatics impacting our understanding of intellectual property?
A: Bioinformatics rests at the intersection of computing and biology, and as such, it straddles two worlds that have traditionally had very different relationships to intellectual property laws. Biotech and pharmaceuticals, on one hand, rely very heavily on IP rights. Without patent protection, the business model of these companies simply would not be viable. Without patents, R&D spending and the pace of innovation in these industries would likely collapse.
