Using Information for Regulatory Results
An Interview with David Weil, Associate Professor of Finance and Economics
Q: Much of your work looks at governmental regulation of corporations. What are some of the central issues arising lately in this field?
A: A big issue—most recently illustrated by the Sarbanes-Oxley disclosure requirements—is the shift in how Congress and other legislative bodies design regulations. More and more frequently, government requires organizations to provide the public with information as the primary method for dealing with public policy problems.
In my view, this trend holds good and bad news for regulators, business, and the public.
