Registration Information
Boston University students register once each semester for the following semester. To make this process run smoothly, there are a few steps students can complete prior to their assigned time of registration:
Check Your Mailfile --
• Registration information containing an advising code will be placed in students' mailfiles prior to the registration period, with the exception of freshmen, who will receive their materials during their SM121: Management as a System lab. Most of the materials SMG students need for registration will be found in the Document Library on SMGnet (login required). If a student does not find registration instructions in his/her mailfile, then he/she should contact the Undergraduate Program Office immediately.
Plan --
• Complete the WebReg course planner online. Students can add and remove courses from their planners at any time during the semester. WebReg also has a graphing function so students can plot their schedules and be aware of any time conflicts immediately.
• Students should be sure to have the necessary pre-requisites and/or class standing requirement for the courses they plan to take in the following semester. It is the students' responsibility to know their necessary pre-requisites. All pre-requisites appear on the SMG course schedule. Students will not receive credit for courses taken without the appropriate pre-requisites and/or class standing.
See An Advisor --
• If a student is uncertain about his/her course selection, he/she should make an appointment with an academic advisor who will go over remaining course requirements and advise him/her on proper course selection.
• Students preparing to register for senior year classes, he/she must meet with the Concentration Liaison in his/her concentration department. The Liaison will assist the student in the development of a Plan of Study form. Completion of a Plan of Study form is required in order to register for the senior year; registration packets will be withheld for those students who have not submitted a signed Plan of Study form (available in the Document Library on SMGnet).
• Students may request a copy of their progress checksheet from the Undergraduate Program Office to assist with their course selection, or they may consult their Degree Audit on the Student Link. Students should not wait until the week before registration to meet with an academic advisor. While we do offer walk-in advising hours for several weeks during registration periods, it is not possible to see all students during the week prior to registration. Remember to make appointments early in the semester to avoid the rush.
