HONORS PROGRAM CURRICULUM

Freshman Colloquia

This required component features topics primarily connected to SM 121/122: Management as a System, and is designed to challenge students to think about business from new perspectives. There will be several meetings each semester on Mondays from 4:00 – 5:00 PM in room 222. Each colloquium meeting will feature a guest faculty member or executive businessperson, or a company visit. The colloquium will be graded on a pass/fail basis. Topics and assigned readings will be announced in advance of each session.

Some of the topics to be considered are:

  • The law on discrimination and sexual harassment in the workplace
  • Environmental sustainability and the "bottom line"
  • Globalization
  • Governmental regulations and their effect on business
  • Keeping one step ahead in the rapidly changing world of technology

The colloquium is about evaluating students’ ability in a more relaxed atmosphere. It is graded on a pass/fail basis, but attendance and preparation are required.  Students are expected to prepare for the colloquium and keep the discussions lively and thought-provoking.  For some students, this colloquium has led to summer employment and a new area of concentration.
